Pick Perfection

Everyone has their own opinion on how to pick a perfectly ripe watermelon. But here are some good rules of thumb to follow in your selection process:

  • Think heavy! Watermelons are made up of mostly, you guessed it, water. So, an ideal, ripe melon will be weighted down with water and be heavy for its size.
  • Check the rind! Make sure there are no cuts, dents, bruises or soft spots.
  • Flip it! Check the bottom of the melon and you will find a discolored spot where the melon was in contact with the ground while it was growing. A light green spot means no-go, but if the spot is yellowish-white, the melon is a winner.
